"20 000 people were killed in the past year. The majority of killers and victims are men," Ramaphosa says at summit.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa will launch a national strategic plan to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) after years of lobbying by activists.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the Presidential GBV Summit Thursday, the latest in a string of meetings convened by Ramaphosa on significant issues facing the country such as health and unemployment.

During his speech, he commended activists who called for a nation-wide shut down in August in response to high levels of GBV and feticide in the country. He says the government is now reviewing national GBV plans and will develop a national action plan.
